Message from ASBMR President Laura Calvi, M.D. – December 21, 2023

    Dear Colleagues,

It was great connecting with so many of you in Vancouver this past October. All the outstanding research, career development sessions and network opportunities showcased during the meeting so clearly embodied the vibrant and ever evolving nature of our society!

Our 2024 Annual Meeting Program Committee, led by Dr. Roberta Faccio, has been hard at work to create an exciting and innovative program for our 2024 Annual Meeting, taking place September 27-30, 2024, in Toronto, Canada, with the support of Dr. Carola Zillikens (Clinical Research and Practice Co-Chair), Dr. Patricia Ducy (Translational Research Co-Chair) and Dr. Noriaki Ono (Basic Research Co-Chair). Initiatives from all the ASBMR Committees are being coordinated to make sure our members are at the forefront of musculoskeletal research and clinical practice, access opportunities for career development and networking, and still have time to reconnect with colleagues, mentors and mentees.

ASBMR is committed to working with sister societies in pursuing our mission of advancing bone, mineral and musculoskeletal science and promote the translation of basic and clinical research to improve health. As a recent example of successful collaboration to other societies, our Professional Practice Committee, led by Drs. Matthew Drake, Elaine Yu and with the assistance of Nicola Napoli (Council Liaison), contributed to the recently released American Diabetes Association Standards of Care in Diabetes. The ASBMR and ADA are also planning a joint publication on diabetes and bone health in the new year. The publication will appear in both Diabetes Care and in JBMR®.

Earlier this week I was delighted to join Dr. Rhonda Prisby, Program Director of THRIVE, in welcoming our inaugural cohort of scientists underrepresented in biomedical research who will receive comprehensive longitudinal early/mid-career professional and leadership development. We look forward to their participation in ASBMR!

As I shared with those of you who attended our virtual Town Hall meeting, many activities, aligned with our strategic pillars, are planned for 2024 and were just approved for production by your elected representatives in Council. These activities were developed with input from ASBMR members and will be conducted through the integrated work of our committees and member volunteers.  We look forward to your continued engagement, ideas and participation as we innovate, grow and act for the benefit of all our members worldwide.

My sincere gratitude for your steadfast support and engagement of the Society and field in 2023.  Your commitment fuels ASBMR's mission!

I wish each of you a New Year filled with peace, joy and good health. Look forward to my forthcoming letter in January, outlining our 2024 strategic initiatives.

    Sincerely,

    Laura Calvi, M.D.
    ASBMR President
